"In a bid to improve operational efficiency, Nestle said it will cut 12,000 white-collar jobs and a further 4,000 roles will be reduced over the next two years." What were these workers doing before if they are suddenly no longer necessary?

At least shareholders are happy. Too bad 16k people won't be able to put food on the table.

If you look at the Nestle's past head count, they've been cutting jobs continuely over last 10 years. So it's not big shock. Probably some middle-managers are getting laid off (they'll be fine.. they'll find other companies to be unproductive in..)
