Hey Sam, where is Stargate Argentina?
Sam Altman announced Stargate Argentina in partnership with energy company Sur Energy. One slight problem: Sur Energy ain't real.
Stargate Argentina
Sam Altman may have never operated a profitable business in his life, but you cannot deny he has a knack for selling a narrative.
In October 2025, Sam announced Stargate Argentina, an expansion of the
original Stargate project. OpenAI would supposedly collaborate with
an Argentine-U.S.-owned company, Sur Energy, on an investment worth an
estimated $25 billion.

Today we are proud to announce plans to launch Stargate Argentina, an exciting new infrastructure project in partnership with one of the country's leading energy companies, Sur Energy.
This milestone is about more than just infrastructure. It's about putting AI into the hands of people across Argentina. We are excited to work with Argentina as it builds towards becoming an AI hub for all of Latin America.
Sur Energy Isn’t Real
The company Sur Energy, OpenAI's partner in the Stargate Argentina initiative, is not a real company, much less an energy company capable of handling billions of dollars worth of infrastructure buildout.
What Sam described as "a leading energy company in Argentina" appears to be nothing more than a website that was vibe-coded by an intern.
Check it out yourself:
https://www.sur.energy
This is not the website of a leading energy company. It contains no more than three paragraphs of text, none of which offer substantial information.
In the Media section, there are no mentions in the press outside of the single announcement of Sur Energy partnering with OpenAI.
The three named founding partners consisting of Emiliano Kargieman, Mat Travizano, and Stan Chudnovsky, appear to all be based in the United States. Their own biographies offer zero evidence of experience or knowledge in operating an energy company.
Speculation
One can only speculate about what is going on. What this looks like is Sam Altman creating a false narrative - one that makes OpenAI appear like they are expanding rapidly and growing as a company faster than they really are.
But the Stargate Argentina expansion seems non-existent. Sur Energy is certainly not an energy company with the capability to build out power plants. There has been no follow-up from OpenAI. There are no known investors. None of this seems real.
So, what gives, Sam? What's going on here?
